Traditional Electric Water Heaters

What they look like, what they are exactly, how they work, why they break down, and what your options are when they break down.

Traditional tank style Electric hot water heaters have been heating water for as long as electricity has been found in the home. Back in the “old days” when everything was built to last they would operate for 25+ years.  Now a days 10-12 years is what you can expect your electric water heater to last.  40 & 50 gallon Rheem, State and  AO Smith electric hot water heaters bought from a quality plumbing supply store such as Bender plumbing supply in New Haven CT, cost from $350-$450 for good ones such as Rheem, State, & Bradford white. One “high end” electric water heater I know of is from AO Smith, the core/ inner tank is made of plastic, and they say it lasts forever. The cost is high (about $1,100.) and comes with lifetime warranty. However there is no significant energy savings with this unit over other electric water heaters.

Basic labor to have any electric water heater installed (with out issues) is any where from $250 to $450 depending on your area of the country, and work zone (how accessible the heater is in your home or business), you also have tax, and other possible costs/”issues” for example; if their are old brass pipes feeding the old tank, new copper should be bought up with a new shut off valve, which would likely be an extra charge.  Another reason for a higher installation price might be if the water heater is located in a crawl space under the house with low ceiling heights & limited accessibility etc.
