Early signs your hot water heater is dying.

in Tips And Suggestions, Traditional Gas & Electric Water Heaters

It’s obvious when your heater is dead, it’s stopped working, but how do you know when it’s dying?
These are some things to look for:
If your hot shower isn’t lasting as long as it use to. -  The gas burner, or electric electric elements aren’t working like they use to., or the dip tubes have disintegrated away. You can spend the money to have either replaced which is a good idea if the tank is only -7 years old, but if your heater is about 10 -12+ years old or older I wouldn’t suggest putting money into a dying tank.

Is your water looking dirty? First thing, make sure you don’t have a dirty water filter. This only goes for people that have whole house water filters.  Just after new water heaters are installed and the water is restored to the house, the water will be dirty.  This is completely normal.  However if the dirty water starts flowing for no reason, and your neighbors are not experiencing the same water conditions, you should ask some if u can  before calling the plumber cause if everyone on the street is experiencing the same thing it most likely has to due withe the water company.  If your all alone in this matter  it’s most likely your water heater.   Dirt & sediment can build up on the bottom of the tank over time, and will eventually end up coming out of the faucet.

If you see any visible signs of a dying water heater. Water on the top of the tank, under the tank.  Rusty water marks going down the sides of the tank.  If the tank is leaning to one side.   The legs are rusting off etc.

Strange sounds:  Electric water heaters can make strange sounds while they are dying from buzzing elements. Dip tubes can break down inside both electric and gas water heater and that produces a ”swirling” sound in the tank.

If your water smells funny.  This could mean a number of things, but if your water heater tank is older than 10-15 years old, you can bet that your tank may have some  thing to do with it.  Certain types of naturally occurring minerals can build up inside your tank over time and eventually produce a smell.    If you water heater is less than ten years old try flushing out the tank before anything else.

If your water heater looks like any of these pictured below you need a new water heater.
