Note: All this information is from Engery star’s website. Luckily for you I (Jay) spent a few hours going threw every link there is on the Energy stars website pertaining to subject of water heating systems, the tax credits that pertain to them, and posted my findings here. This is all the information in one neat and convent place!
However for those of you that feel the need to torcher yourselves by looking thew dozens & dozens of links, or.. would like information on other energy star appliances. http://www.energystar.gov/

If you purchase an energy-efficient product or renewable energy system for your home, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit. Below you will find an overview of the federal tax credits for energy efficiency for water heater products.
Please note, not all ENERGY STAR qualified products qualify for a tax credit. ENERGY STAR distinguishes energy efficient products which, although they may cost more to purchase than standard models, will pay you back in lower energy bills within a reasonable amount of time, without a tax credit. Water heating can account for 14%–25% of the energy consumed in your home. This credit was deigned to encourage home owners to install products with high energy efficiency. The $1,500 dollar credit applies towards the costs associated with the new water heating products and installation costs.
What is included in the Federal Tax Credit? The tax Credit covers 30% of costs up to $1,500. It Expires: December 31, 2010. Basic requirements: Must be an existing home & principal residence. New construction and rentals do not qualify
What are the energy-efficient products requirements basic on? Energy Factor & Thermal Efficiency.
- Energy Factor-
- is the measure of overall efficiency for a variety of appliances. For water heaters, the energy factor is based on three factors: 1) the recovery efficiency, or how efficiently the heat from the energy source is transferred to the water; 2) stand-by losses, or the percentage of heat lost per hour from the stored water compared to the content of the water: and 3) cycling losses. For dishwashers, the energy factor is defined as the number of cycles per kWh of input power. For clothes washers, the energy factor is defined as the cubic foot capacity per kWh of input power per cycle. For clothes dryers, the energy factor is defined as the number of pounds of clothes dried per kWh of power consumed.
- Thermal Efficiency-
- For energy-conversion heating devices their peak steady-state “thermal efficiency” is often stated, e.g., ‘this furnace is 90% efficient’, but a more detailed measure of seasonal energy effectiveness is the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE).
* Qualified water heating products: I can’t list all the products individually, but I will list at least one example within each category.
New Gas, Oil, Propane Water Heaters Federal energy-efficient tax credit program requirements:
Energy Factor greater than, 0.82 OR a thermal efficiency of at least 90%.
* A good example of this would be the A.O. Smith Vertex 100 Power Direct-Vent Gas Water Heater. It has 96% thermal efficiency, (and unprecedented levels of performance vs. standard gas water heaters.)
**No “normal” “traditional” tank type water heaters qualify for this program.
New Gas, Propane, and Electric Tankelss Water Heaters Federal energy-efficient tax credit program requirements:
All units with an Energy Factor greater than, 0.82 OR a thermal efficiency of at least 90%.
* About a dozen companies produce tankless water heaters. A few would be Navien, Noritz, Takagi, and Paloma.
(The picture top-right is a nice duel system we did in New Haven last year using 2 different kinds of Navien tankless water heaters. One unit was for domestic hot water needs and the other was used in a low demand radiant heating system.)
**All tankless water heaters will proudly display their energy factor & efficiency ratings right on the box, front of the manuals, and on the companies website’s, which you can find on the Home Page of this website.
New Electric Heat Pump Water Heater Federal energy-efficient tax credit requirements:
Energy Factor greater than 2.0
* A great example is the Rheem’s new heat pump water heater. It’s called the Rheem HP-50. Full story here.
**Anyone that will be replacing an electric water heater should very seriously consider going with a Heat Pump water heater, they are 2 – 3 times more efficient than regular electric water heaters, and produce more hot water at a faster rate. They will provide a return on investment in 2 – 3 years, after that you will save many thousands of dollars (5 – 10K) of savings over the coarse of the water heaters life. If you have the money, install it, case closed. Even if you had to borrow the money to buy it and pay the loan back with interest. The amount of money you will save every month will be far more than your monthly interest payment! It’s that ridiculous. This is the official Rheem HP-50’s website if you want to check it out further.
New Boiler Federal energy-efficient tax credit requirements:
Oil Furnaces – AFUE of 90 or greater (AFUE= Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)
Gas, Propane, or Oil Hot Water Boilers – AFUE of 90 or greater
* The high efficient boiler we are going with these days is the high efficiency boilers from Utica. Utica’s UB95M-200 gas-fired modulating condensing boiler was the first 95% AFUE boiler available. Check out the Utica modulating condensing boiler web site for more information here.
Is there a tax credit for indirect water heaters. No:
New Geothermal Heat Pump Federal energy-efficient tax credit requirements:
On December 1, 2009 a new ENERGY STAR geothermal heat pump specification was released which I need to further research, but geothermal heat pumps are some of the most energy efficient products on earth. I assume they all qualify for the 1,500 dollar tax credit, until I know for sure this is only speculation.
New air source Heat Pump Federal energy-efficient tax credit requirements:
Split Systems: HSPF >8.5 - EER >12.5 - SEER >15
Package systems: HSPF >8 - EER >12 - SEER >14
EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) The higher the EER rating, the more energy efficient the equipment is. This results in lower energy costs. HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) rates the efficient operation of the heating portion of the heat pump. As the HSPF increases, the unit functions at a more efficient level. New units in the US have HSPF ratings from 7.0 to 9.4. SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the equipment is. A higher SEER results in lower energy costs.
Frequently Asked Questions about the energy efficiency federal tax credit program.
What paper work to I need to submit and save? You only need to submit Form 5695 (which we will provide for you) with your taxes. Save your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for your records. (A Manufacturer’s Certification Statement is a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit.) (Which is provided in the box with the new unit) Manufacturers also provide these Certifications on their website. (Their are a list of links for many manufactures on the front page of this website.) Call the manufacturer, or search their website if you can not find your original certificate. Taxpayers must keep a copy of the certification statement for their records, but do not have to submit a copy with their tax return.
How do I apply for my Federal Tax Credit? (We provide them). but you can go to http://www.irs.gov or better yet go straight to this link, and their you can print the form out from your computer.
Can I include sales tax when determining the total cost for the tax credit?
Yes, sales tax can be included for all covered products and labor.

Here goes a scintilla from my latest in the Huffington Fall someone a crew on the outcome of the presidential elections in Ukraine and the shipping subvene of Viktor Yanukovych. Admitting that it was published after I had already posted my article, I liked this take home up from the Economist: “…old habits on pass authority of the mother-of-pearl gates hard. The predilection of buying judges or appointing prosecutors to safeguard role interests is vibrant and well. The foxy to discontinue the rules again to assist to precinct the bacon a valuable asset could pass over too much to resist.
The paramount irony of the Yanukovych best is that there are heterogeneous moralistic reasons why this outcome is depressed in the arouse of Putin and foregather payment Medvedev, and adverse to the siloviki while fissure opportunities as a replacement representing the believably yearning reformers within function of the state. As the historian Timothy Garton Ash has respected in the Defender, “there is no demonstration that the oligarchs behind him stress Ukraine to refrain from ceaselessly being an leaving exposed country.
