You can have the nicest looking website in the world, but if people aren’t finding it/ it isn’t search engine friendly, it’s not worth a dollar.

Waterheatinginfo.com is the best plumbing blog site on Earth because it’s filled with over 100,000 words of data pertaining to one subject. Water heating. Wateheatinginfo.com is a multimillion dollar company in the making for this very same reason.

We don’t need investors to make that happen, but extra capital would accomplish that goal sooner than later.

The site was originally launched 11/8/09, and we currently (3/10/10) get 3,000- 5,000 hits a day with no significant startup capital. The site currently generates a couple thousand dollars a week, but we know we could multiply those numbers tenfold with a proper investment in hardware, hosting, & programming we need to implement our “maste plan” to accomplish this.

When we have an audience that translates into 20,000+ hits a day or so the site will be generating many hundreds of thousands, to a couple million dollars a year.

How can I turn ten thousand dollars into forty thousand?
What is a great investment idea?
how to find a great start up company to invest in?
Want to invest in a great company that can provide you with a great return on your investment?

AMN Industries has the plan, team, ideas, and wants to create a dozen more sites just like this one, (but better), and establish it’s self as a billion dollar media empire. Want to come for the ride?

We are not interested in working with any large banks, ideally we are looking for a smart independently wealthy person that has an interested in what we do, and wants to multiple their investment with a great group of people that have a winning business plan. amnindustries@yahoo.com

Heat rises, so if you’re hot water heater is directly under your kitchen for instance, the hot water will only need to travel a short distance, thus the hot water only takes ten – twenty seconds or so to come out of the faucet. On the other hand (for another example) if you hot water heater is in the corner your basement, and your master bath room is on the second floor opposite side of the house from the water heater, the hot water will need to travel a much further distance to get to your fixtures, the result is it’s takes a minute or two for hot water to start flowing.

Another reason, concern, and even complaint is that after a “high efficiency” upgrade to the domestic water heating system, (a tankless water heater for example) the hot water takes much longer than it did with the old system.

The reason is. Lets say for example you had an oil fired water heater (which is insanely un-efficient), you have been used to hot water almost instantly coming out of your faucets, and now with your tankless water heater the water takes a minute or longer to get hot.

Why does my tankless water heater takes so long to make hot water? I thought it made water hot instantly!

(These two questions tie in together.)

Back to the example above. The oil fired water heater was making so much hot water (all day long, whether it was needed or not) the hot water forced it’s way threw a great deal of your houses plumbing. The result is the water seemed to be produced faster, where in reality the hot water was just there in the pipes near the fixture.

The tankless water heater does in fact produce hot water instantly, BUT the water in the “hot” pipes within the house are no longer filled with hot water all day long (like it was with the un-effiecnt oil fired heater) , and now the hot water (tho it’s created instantly) has to make it’s way through all the plumbing (push all the cold water out) before the hot water gets to the desired fixture!

It’s common sense if you think about it. But like everything else, you don’t know until you know. Now you know.

My hot water takes to long, what can I do about it?

Some plumbers are just out for the quickest buck and don’t think about the client ever again a few minutes after the get a check from a client, and some guys like our own Bruce and Jarrell perform every installation like we would want performed in our own homes. If you think installing a tankless water heater is slapping the unit on the wall, and tying in the gas and water lines, you are greatly mistaken. There is A LOT of thought and consideration that has to be taken before even considering a tankless water heater installation. Leave it to the experts!

Tankless water heaters can have a long delay, which is natural, but there are some things that can be done.

For example. Change all the 1/2 inch water lines to 3/4 lines.
|

Things to note:

*WELL SYSTEMS- If you have well water with out a storage tank, you should install a storage tank (if you want to use a tankless water heater) the reason is the tankless water heater wants to get the hot water to the fixture fast, but it will only be able to push out the hot water as fast as the well’s pump is able to supply the unit with water. (which usually isn’t fast enough) A storage tank would increase water flow.

*LOW FLOW- If you have a low flow show head that uses less than 2 gallons of water per minute there could be a problem. The tankless unit has a flow sensor in it, which won’t allow it to turn on until enough “flow” hot water, is called for. To fix this simply waste more water, (get a different shower head)

* What the heck is wrong with my washing machine? If you have a fancy energy star washing machine, and a tankless water heater, you may have a situation with the washing machine not cleaning the clothes properly, or the machine may be making strange noises, or you may even see some kind of blinking code on the display pad.
The reason most likely, the washing machine only uses a small amount of hot water, and if the hot water takes a couple minutes to get there, the washing machine isn’t going to be happy. (it’s not getting hot water fast enough).
This can cause the tankless water heater to “sandwich” which basically means turns on and off. Those front end loading high efficiency washing machine are wonderful, but don’t work very well with tankless water heaters.

To fix the problem, you could install a point of use hot water heater right next to the washing machine, or you can run a dedicated hot water line from the water heater to the washing machine. (this is called installing a “home run” line)

I’m excited to welcome Mr. Trudeau, owner and operator of -C.A Trudeau Solar Plumbing and Heating-.
Fully Insured & License# PL -283810

Mr. Trudeau is one of only 18 licensed solar water heating installers in Connecticut at this time (3/2/10) His company has been installing Solar water heaters, solar pool heaters, and solar radiant systems for over ten year. He proudly covers the entire state of Connecticut and installed hundreds of solar systems threw out Connecticut.
We met Mr. Trudeau at a Bender plumbing supply in New Haven CT. He was in a meeting leaning about Rheem’s new SolPak solar water heating system, as we were. The SolPak is a brand new complete system “all in one box” which fully qualifies for the $1,500, unlike the majority of companies in the solar water heating business. We spoke for a while after the meeting and I told him about waterheatinginfo.com. He thought it sounded like a great idea and wanted to get involved, so with his permission I’m creating this post on his behalf.

C.A. Trudeau specializes in the installation, repair, and maintenance of solar water heating systems threw out Connecticut.

Solar water heaters, solar pool heating systems, solar radiant heating systems, and every other solar water heating installation required Mr. Trudeau can get it done correctly, quickly, and at the most competitive prices around.

Mr Trudeau is one of the best Solar water heating contractor in Connecticut, he is committed to providing top quality Solar water heating systems threw out New Haven, and Fairfield counties.

Mention waterheatinginfo.com and ask about setting up a free estimate.

——————————————–

Solar water heating or solar hot water is water heated by the use of solar energy. Solar heating systems generally consist of solar thermal collectors, a water storage tank, water piping, and a pump to move the heated water from the collector to the tank. This thermodynamic approach is completely from solar electric systems which use semiconductor photovoltaic (PV) cells that generate electricity from light; whereas solar water heating directly heats liquids by the sun where no electricity is directly generated. A solar water heating system may use electricity for pumping the fluid (the circulator pump), and have a reservoir or tank with a back up heating system for heating and storing water during times of low sun exposure. The water can be heated for a wide variety of uses, including home, business and industrial uses. Heating swimming pools is a very popular and typically the 1st solar installation for a home, or family. Underfloor heating also known as radiant heating are other examples of solar water heating.

Solar Precautions! Freeze protection

Freeze protection measures prevent damage to the system due to the expansion of freezing transfer fluid. Some systems drain the transfer fluid from the system when the pump stops. In indirect systems (where the transfer fluid is separated from the heated water), this is called drainback and in direct systems (where the heated water is used as the transfer fluid) it is called draindown. Many indirect systems use anti-freeze (e.g. glycol) in the heat transfer fluid. This approach is simpler and more reliable than drainback and is common in climates where freezing temperatures occur often.

In both direct and indirect systems, automatic recirculation may be used for freeze protection. When the water in the collector reaches a temperature near freezing, the controller turns the pump on for a few minutes to warm the collector with water from the tank.

In some direct systems, the collectors are manually drained when freezing is expected. This approach is common in climates where freezing temperatures do not occur often.

Solar Precautions! Overheat protection

The water from the collector can reach very high temperatures in good sunshine, or if the pump fails. Designs should allow for relief of pressure and excess heat through a heat dump. Almost all systems have pressure relief valves through which excessive water pressure or steam can be vented. Active systems often reduce water temperature in the storage tank by circulating hot water through the collector at night (when solar energy does not heat the collector).

Economics and Other Benefits of Active Solar Heating Systems

Active solar heating systems are most cost-effective when they are used for most of the year, that is, in cold climates with good solar resources. They are most economical if they are displacing more expensive heating fuels, such as electricity, propane, and oil heat. Some states offer sales tax exemptions, income tax credits or deductions, and property tax exemptions or deductions for solar energy systems.

The cost of an active solar heating system will vary. Commercial systems range from $30 to $80 per square foot of collector area, installed. Usually, the larger the system, the less it costs per unit of collector area. Commercially available collectors come with warranties of 10 years or more, and should easily last decades longer. The economics of an active space heating system improve if it also heats domestic water, because an otherwise idle collector can heat water in the summer.

Heating your home with an active solar energy system can significantly reduce your fuel bills in the winter. A solar heating system will also reduce the amount of air pollution and greenhouse gases that result from your use of fossil fuels such as oil, propane, and natural gas for heating or that may be used to generate the electricity that you use.

The Rheem Solar System of the future is here today!

Everyone is familiar with the basic idea of Solar water heaters. Sunlight hits a light/heat collector; the hot water is stored in a tank. Which in turn basically consists of strapping up a couple solar collectors on the roof, adding a few safety devises, expansion tank, copper piping, a tank, and Basically that it, basically.

Most people like the idea of lowering their carbon foot print and helping out mother Earth when we can, but let’s be honest everyone likes the idea of having more money in their pockets.

My grandfather used to say to me, “Jarrell, it’s a lot easier to save money than it is to make more” I always thought that was pretty cleaver, and it’s really true, and growing up and now having my own house, I see these insane Gas and Electric bills coming in first hand. It’s totally insane. I admittedly I have a ridiculously un-efficient 100 year old beach house, but nearly spend as much for my gas, power, as I do on my mortgage. Saving money is easier than making more money.

Solar water heating can save you HUGE amounts of money. More money than you probably know. Over ten to 20 years, enough money to put 2 or 3 kids through college, and I’m not talking about community college, (not that there’s anything wrong with community college, Shout out to Brookdale!).

If you’re a single guy like me, that takes one shower a day and does laundry once a week, the return on investment on installing a new Rheem Solar water heating system might take a decade to hit the break even point and start saving $$$.

However if there are 4 or more people in your home, your using about 208,000 gallons of water a year, and heating about 85,000 gallons of water a year. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_gallons_of_water_does_an_average_family_of_4_use_in_1_calendar_year Costing you anywhere from 5 – 10 thousand dollars if you’re paying for electric, propane, and even natural gas water heaters. For you, Mr. or Mrs. Head of the household, a good solar water heating system with good sun exposure will save you up to 85% off your water heating bills, and will keep tens of thousands of dollars in your pocket of it’s service life.

Down to the Nitty Griddy!

The Rheem solar water heater is not just a solar water heater tank; it’s the entire complete system which fully qualifies for the federal 1,500 tax energy efficiency credit program. That’ s the big difference. 99% of all the companies selling solar water heaters just sell the tank, or collectors, not the entire system as the Rheem Solar system does. Saving money is the reason you’re here, and Rheem’s solar system not only provides you with reliable, cheep, earth friendly hot water for years, it also has 1,500 reasons for you next tax season. Unlike 95+% of all the “solar companies” out there.

If you live in cold weather environments like I do you will need an Active solar water heating system. Active meaning = Frost protected.

The Rheem Solpak Active solar water heating system features.
Closed loop glycol design-
Double collector systems
*Included in the package:

Saturday 2/18 Hartford Connecticut. The Plumbing and Heating Expo show.
If you are in the water heating business (aka plumber, supplier,) or run an awesome site like this one. You were, or should have been in Hartford last Saturday for the plumbing and heating expo to learn all about the newest technology and water heating products offered today, and will be offered soon in the future. It was free to attend; free coffee & lunch were also included at no charge.

First I’d like to note that waterheatinginfo.com receives no funding/ money from any of the companies mentioned in this post. To be honest, we would like that to happen in the near future, and expect it too, but we will always share unbiased opinions & observations to the world about all the water heating products we can find to talk about. If we’re happy with a product or manufacture from personal experiences, we’re going to talk about it in the site. Some of the products shown at the expo had to do with heating air/ not water, so we’re not going to talk about that here. Other water heating companies were showing off commercial end products, again we are mostly into water heating products for homeowners on this site, so we’re not going to talk about those booths either.

Lets us begin…. The show went from 10am – 4pm, in the expo center in Hartford. We arrived at about 10:30 and the place was jamming with hundreds of product representatives, plumbing supply owners, plumbers, home owners, and members of the media there. Id say about a thousand people were there at any given time. We had two tickets in advance, but needed one more at the door. The expo’s system is vastly better than it was last year, because they had a new computer system and a lighting fast ticket printing machine. We breezed right in, and there were a bunch of pretty women at the front desk helping with the admissions- Nice.

There were many different water heating companies displaying their newest water heating units for 2010; AO Smith, Baxi, Buderus, Bradford white,Bock, Crown, Eternal, Honeywell , Unica, Laars, Navien, Rheem, Rudd, Rainnai, Mega-Stor , State, Takagi, Paloma, to name a few.

We wanted to start our walk at the Expo center with our friends at the Bender Plumbing’s both. They unveiled a motorcycle that’s made partly out of real plumbing parts. The bike’s builders was very creative and put a lot of time and energy into the creation. The Bender Motorcycle actually works, however, at the time it was a bit too loud for normal usage, so they couldn’t start it up. You can see me here with Max Bender in front of the Bender Motorcycle. It’s not quite finished yet, but Mark told me that it will be going back to the shop and will be road ready soon. It was pretty much the coolest, most unique thing at the expo in my opinion.

Rheem SolPak

Right next door was Rheem. The rep talked to us for a while about many different things. The new 95 series tanklesswater heater was one I remember. It’s a solid choice for a new continuous tankless installation at a great price point. What I was really excited about however, was the new solar water heating solutions they unveiled to the world. A new highly efficiency solar system that is fully integrated and packaged as an entire system, which fully qualifies for the federal $1,500 federal tax credits. This is a new thing that most solar companies offer, solar panels and other collectors, not a complete system, which is required by the new federal efficiency tax credit requirements for solar water heating systems.

The newest combination boiler from Baxi

Next we went to check out the booth at Baxi,. They had a nice set up for the trade show, which was a trailer complete with two Baxi units piped in as they would be in a real installation. The Baxi combie-boiler has an expansion tank, and a few other components built right in the tank, which saves money on parts and the labor to install them, which isn’t the case for most manufacturing companies in the combie-boiler business.

Laars Mini Therm Boiler

We then checked out the Laars both next. We had actually installed a few Laars Mini Therm boilers over the past couple winters. They are very small, provide a ton of heat, and are at a good price point. (Insider tip) Installers must read the installation diagram before installation, because the loop & location of expansion tank needs to be located as specifically stated in the diagram (which is different than most boiler manufacturing requirements!). So be careful installers!

We walked around and spoke to many people we recognized, one of which, being the owner of Main Plumbing supply in Bridgeport CT, other plumbers, and plumbing supply owners.

Lunch time. My mother always said if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. The hamburger and soda were free so I won’t complain.

After lunch, we walked to the far end of the expo center where I saw a beautiful woman. Not a bad way to start the second shift of information gathering! The women I spoke to at Yankee Gas was very nice to talk to, as well as pleasant and informative. Her job as a sales consultant is to first find out what gas suppliers are available for your area. If Yankees gas service is available in your area she would then set up an appointment to come out to the property to evaluate the amount of material (gas pipe) and labor it will take to get you hooked up. She will also calculate any costs associated with the new service installation, which is not always necessary, but occasionally is. If you need any help with converting to gas from oil, or an all electric system, call Yankee Gas. Okay….

Off to Navien’s booth. Over the past year, we have installed dozens of Navien tankless water heaters, and looked forward to meeting the Navien reps. Navien tankless water heaters are some of the best on Earth with the highest efficiency rating for those of you that don’t know. We talked about their new tankless combie-boiler coming out this spring, which will be able to provide hot water for entire houses, domestic, and all the radiant heating needed at a price other companies can’t touch. Here is a picture of me standing next to the new Navien combie-boiler. (with the cover off) I snapped a couple pictures, shook a few hands and we were off to the next one.

Honeywell True Steam Humidifier

We stopped by Honeywell because they were displaying their True Steam humidifier for hot air heating systems, which we install a few every month. The True Steam instantaneously creates steam from the units cold water supplied to the unit. Steam is the best and only way to go these days. They work the best, needs the least amount of cleaning/maintenance, and because they inject actual steam into the duck work, there is no need to worry about mold growth, which is a possibility with cold water humidifiers. If you want to increase the humidity in your home or building, I recommend the Honeywell True Steam humidifier. There is also a Remote Kit available for the Honeywell True Steam, which allows you to mount the unit one area and run insulated piping to the duck work, which can be up to about 20 feet away. We’ve installed the True Steam twice with the remote installation kit and it worked perfectly.

We met a nice rep from Bock water heaters. Bock has been around for a long time and is the oil-fired heater of choice for most of our oil-fired water heater installations in CT. So we didn’t need to hear much, as we already knew quite a bit about their heaters, and they weren’t really unveiling anything new & exciting. We did talk about this website, and I told the gentleman to Google search oil-fired water heaters in CT, lol. Yep that’s us.

All and all, everyone I spoke to (about a hundred people) about their products and also told them about our websites. www.waterheatersgonewild.com and www.waterheatinginfo.com . Everyone seemed to be very excited about the website and said they were going to check it out. The site is pretty amazing with zero funding. I hope a water heating company in the near future sees the value of this site and our tremendously valuable users that range between 1,500 – 3,500 visits a day. We need money for new cameras, hosting fees, web development, future amazing audio & visual projects. Contact us today@ AMNindustries@yahoo.com

The search term “Navien Complaints” unfortunately has been getting searched here over the past month.

We have created this post to discuss possible issues with your Navien tankless water heater, but before we get into the problems and solutions I want to talk a little more about the Navien tankless water heater in a positive manner, because most of these complaints are not the fault of the company, but bad installations by untrained/ under qualified plumbers.

For those of you that don’t know Navien tankless water heater are the most efficient tankless water heaters on Earth with a 98% efficiency rating, most tankless heaters such as Nortiz are at 92 -96% efficiency, and Rinnai is only around 88% efficient.

Navien is one of the ”newer” tankless water heating companies today, but their engineers and management team have been in the tankelss water heating business for more than 30 years. Navien’s engineer’s originally had worked for a Korean tankless water heating company, and had found better ways to make the heater better, but their management didn’t want to go alone with it for whatever reason. The result is; a handful of engineers, upper management, and some sales force left the Korean brand, and acquired funding they needed to start their own company“Navien” a few years ago, you can say the company has an old soul.

Navien is great to work with from a professional level, they are sending our very own master plumber Bruce Somers through a trouble shooting seminar this year, and very soon there after we will be their official Navien factory representatives for Connecticut. If the time arises when we are called to a tankless water heater problem we can’t figure out, all we do is call the Navien tech support, or our area rep, and an actual human being from Navien will come to fix the problem. This is not the case with some other tankless water heating companies we have worked with in the past.

When there is a problem it’s not easy to figure out the problem unless you’re a trained factory representative like our very own (Bruce Somers, of Bruce Somers Plumbing) will be. The first thing you need to figure out is; is there a problem with the unit, or is there a problem with the installation.

About 90% of the problems have to do with improper installation. 10% or less of the “complaints” has to do with actual problems with the unit its self. Meaning if you had a professional plumber install your Navien tankless water heater, and that plumber has installed a few of them before you most likely have a problem with the unit its self, and should call the factory rep. However if you tried to do it yourself, or hired a under-qualified plumber that improperly installed the unit an entire host of problems can develop such as; problems with not enough heat, not hot water all together, error messages on the key pad, turning off for no apparent reason, water taking forever to heat up, strange noises, and about a dozen more possible issues..

Most installation problems that we are seeing and repairing are done by under qualified plumbers, under sizing the gas lines, under sizing the makeup air needed, forgetting about exhaust restrictions, under sizing the unit size altogether, installing them in wrong locations, and hooking heating components up to them. Everything you can imagine we are seeing. Why is this? Most un quilified “plumbers” have no clue how these things work, or care to, and these days many licensed plumbers are willing to do things they wouldn’t normally do because they don’t want to miss out on any jobs in this economy. I’d say in general 40% of our business is fixing other plumbers mistakes, but lately we are getting hundreds of hits a month from people who are Google searching the Navien tankless water heater problem, Navien tankless water heater trouble shooting tips, and what is wrong with my Navien tankless water heater. Whether it’s guys not taking pride in their work, or not taking the time to look at the installation manual, or real issues with unit’s having a bad computer board, or internal valves need to be replaced we are ready willing and able to help you solve your problem as quickly as possible.

To avoid problems associated with poor installations Navien tankless water heaters are only allowed to be sold to licensed plumbers, the company mandates this to avoid most problems in the first place, (unlike many other tankless water heating companies). Surely they are missing out on millions of dollars with this rule, but they do it for the homeowner’s protection. However there are always ways around rules, and unfortunately home owners wanting to so badly to save money try, and manage to buy one themselves, and install the tankless water heaters themselves, or the classic “we let our father-in-law install it” (we hear that one once a week) There are hundreds of things you can DYI , but installing tankless water heaters is NOT one of them.
Why can’t I get a plumber to fix my tankless water heater problem?

Not to many plumbers are willing to “patch up” a hacked up job because we don’t want the responsibility of other problems down the line, or have our names attached to bad installations. The other thing is 99% of your “normal” plumbers out there have absolutely no clue how to fix them. Installing them is one thing, I’d say most plumbers could install them correctly, but less than 0.05% of licensed plumbers in America have any training on how to fix tankless water heaters.

Warranty warning!

Also if a licensed plumber didn’t buy the unit the home owner will have warranty issues because the company will say. “What seems to be the problem with your unit”, and you’ll say whatever the problem is, and their very next question will be “who was your installer”. They will want to know if a licensed plumber did the job or not. You must call us before you make this call! Or you may not get covered under the warranty at all. The tankless company will still help you correct the problem, but you will be paying full price which will be at least 100- 200 for parts, then the labor for a real plumber to make the corrections isn’t cheap. If you are covered under warranty, they will ship the new parts if needed at no cost and will also kick in 200 – 300 hundred dollars to cover a plumbers labor charges to make the corrections. If a qualified plumber can not be found in your area, you will need to have the factory send someone out, which could take a couple days.

To wrap this up. If you had a professional installation and don’t have hot water.

You most likely called your plumber to tell him about the problem, and he will say that he can’t help you because he doesn’t know how to fix them, only install them. At that point you became frustrated, and searched the web for information/ finding this site.

Next step is to… Call Navien and tell them you had a licensed plumber install the water heater, but he doesn’t or will not try to fix it. Getting through to any companies technical support system can be an affair if you’re not on the inside track like waterheatinginfo.com / waterheatersgonewild.com & Bruce Somers plumbing are. We can get a call back within an hour, but it may take an average home owner a bit longer to get a call back.

When you get a hold of Navien, tell them you need someone to come out to fix your unit. Hopefully you live in a populated area an they can get someone out that day. If you are in a lightly populated area Navien might ask you to find your own plumber if they don’t have any one within 100 miles, so you don’t have wait over night for a solution to your issue. (I honestly don’t know what customer support is like in other parts of the country, as I only conduct business in the North East of America where everything it’s perfect you could say.)

If you didn’t have a professional installation and don’t have hot water.

With no question you have an issue due to one or more installation mistakes.

You most likely called a plumber to fix the problem and after many calls to different plumbers you realized that there aren’t to many plumbers that can fix these things. You get frustrated searched the web, found us.

Next step is to call us. I will try to figure out the problem, and give you some direction over the phone, or come over in person if you’re in Connecticut. Other than that you’re going to have to bite the bullet, call Navien, get prepared to spend some money to have it fixed, and be prepared for no hot water for a day maybe two. Attempting to save will cost you more money, no hot water for a couple days, and a pissed off wife. Why risk it?

Leave installing tankless water heaters to professional and experienced installations only!

Ps. If you’re looking for quotes for new tankless water heaters and a “plumber” says anything less than 2k for the entire job parts & labor, watch out!!! It’s just to good to be true, and the guy most likely has no idea what he Is doing, and there’s a good chance your asking to be one of the next countless victims of “To good to be true pricing.” by under qualified plumbers!!! If you do have a problem it will cost you twice as much to correct the problem than it would have if you had if you had the unit installed correctly the first time.

Don’t forget about the extra costs, high quality whole house tankless water heaters cost about 1,000 bucks, but you have other costs also you need to remember.
valve kit, gas line, exhaust piping, condensate pump, gas termination plates, strap hangers, water piping, electrical outlet near by (or outlet installed), black pipe, brass, and copper fittings etc.. Then you have the labor.

If you make less than 215,000 dollars a year, you most likely qualify for the federal $1,500 tax credit, and another 300 dollars from your local gas company. Together it’s almost crazy not to do it. (From a return on investment, future saving in your pocket, space saving, and environmental stand points)

*My 2 pennies.*

*If someone/even a friend tells you they will install one for “a few hundred bucks”, run away/ do not let that person in your house!
*If your father was a plumber in the Navy 40 years ago, don’t let him install your tankless water heater!
*If your nephew just got out of plumbing school, do not let him install your tankless water heater!
*If your getting estimates for a new tankless water heater, and the plumber can not show you at least one picture of a previous tankless water heater installation he or she did, do not let that person install your tankless water heater!
*Do not buy or install an electric tankless/instantaneous hot water heater, unless you have a one bathroom house or less! Unless you are preparid to do major electrical upgrades to you house.
*If the plumber shows up at your house and doesn’t bother to look around to make sure the installation will work out at all by (checking gas lines, venting areas, installation site) do not let that person install your new tankless water heater!
Note: Tankless water heaters can not be installed in every home/ building due to Connecticut plumbing codes, and manufacturing requirements.
*If someone tells you they will install one for less that 2,000 dollars do not let that person install your tankless water heater!

*DO NOT BUY A TANKLESS WATER HEATER FROM HOME DEPOT OR LOWES!!!
(They provide the least hot water on the market, and had a massive recall a couple years ago)
2008 – 2009 figures that Home D doesn’t want you to know about. About 65% of all tankless water heater bought were returned. People thought they were getting a “good deal” but they got major head aches. Leave tankelss water heaters to the pros! and tankelss water heating companies like Navien.

If you stick to my 2 cent worth of advice, 99.% of these tankless water heater problems and issues would never arise. Your natural gas or propane tankless water heater will provide 20-30 years of hot water, and save you a small fortune in the process.

Note: I have not seen/ installed every brand of tankless water heater on the planet, but I have seen and installed many. I go to every trade show there is in the water heating industry I can get to. I talk to dozens of plumbers threw my travels every week, and read everything there is to read about them. I’d say Navien tankless water heaters are definitely one of the best talkless water heaters on Earth, and personally I think they will be industry leaders in the business of heating water within the next few years. *Navien is launching a new modulating, condensing, combination boiler which will be taking the country by storm at the end of Feb 2010. It will be able to provide hot water for all your domestic water & hydronic heating system needs from one small wall hung unit, at a price no other company is near currently.

If you have a complaint about Navien make sure ur directing your anger in the right place. (The plumber that promised you the world, but didn’t know what he was doing.) most likely

Stay tuned for part two, an in depth look at real tankless water heater problems from the inside out with pictures.

Ok, so we didn’t install the first HP-50 in America, but we did install the first HP-50 heat pump water heater in Connecticut and quite possibly, the entire East Coast. WaterHeatingInfo.com & Bruce Somers Plumbing, together, installed the first HP-50 heat pump in Connecticut on Saturday, Jan/23/2010. This blog will post in detail the installation process with pictures.

Other than prices and brief descriptions about HP-50’s, there is not much “real” information about them and nothing like this on the web today. Waterheatinginfo.com is owned, run, and written by real plumbers. So, here is the inside scoop to the newest, most talked about, water heater on the market today . The Rheem HP-50 heat pump water heater.
Two days earlier, we went to pick up the HP-50 from Bender plumbing supply in New Haven, CT. Now, normally picking up a water heater wouldn’t be something worth talking about, but the HP-50 was different. The HP-50 is the first water heater of its kind. The HP-50 is also one of the most efficient water heaters in the world today, by being the first water heater with an integrated heat pump fixed to it. (I wrote a story about the HP-50 about 3 months ago when I first found out about this new, super efficient, electric water heater. To find out how it works read this story.
We went to pick up the HP-50 two days prior to installations, at Bender plumber supply, just to make sure everything was fine. Since this would be the first HP-50 installation in Connecticut, we especially wanted to make sure everything went smoothly.

HP-50 pics

In the first picture, you can see Justin in the fork lift bringing the HP-50 to the truck. You can also see Scott Shore, who is one of our main contacts at Bender, out of his office and next to Bruce’s truck so he could see the first HP-50 being sold. We got a bunch of congrats from the sales and counter guys, as well as being the first company to install one. You can see Jay standing next to the HP-50 in the middle picture. New in the box, the HP-50 is very tall at around 80 inch/6.5 feet tall. Bruce Somers, in the 3rd picture, was making room in his truck so we could pick it up. However, this heater was to tall to fit in his truck and since the HP-50 has sensitive refrigeration mechanisms built into, we did not feel comfortable lying it on its back, as would be fine with traditional water heaters, until we spoke to Rheem factory representatives. This was not a problem as our supplier, Bender plumbing in New Haven, CT, provides free delivery, as many suppliers do for their regular contractor customers, which we are. We set the delivery time on the schedule and had the HP-50 brought back in the supply house.
Saturday comes along and the man from Benders delivers the HP-50 right on time, nine o’clock in the morning, on the dot. So then we’re set to install the first Rheem HP-50 in Connecticut for our new client, Mike from Fairfield County, CT.

HP-50 in box

Installing the HP-50 is pretty straight forward and very similar to installing a traditional electric water heater, but with a few differences.
1. It’s tall, at 75 inches high, plus needs another 12 inches of makeup air space above it. Basically, you’ll need at least a 7.5-8 feet of total height, from the basement floor to the ceiling, to meet the proper installation requirements. The location of the old electric water heater, during our installation, didn’t have enough height for the new HP-50. The result, was that we had to install the HP-50 on the other side of the client’s basement.

2. It condensates. The heat pump produces some condensation water that needs to go somewhere. That must be taken into consideration before the installation process.

HP-50 condensation lines

For our installation, we had to move the old water heater location to the other side of the basement, for two important installation reasons. The first, to get the height we needed, and second, for condensation. On deliberation, we put it right next to a sump pump that was in the basement, which was the best place in our case.
You will need to consider the condensation water for the HP-50 before the installation. Most basements will have something usable nearby; a sump pump, floor drain, slop sink, laundry waste line, or if there’s nothing nearby (close enough were gravity can take the water where it needs to go), you can get a condensation pump to pump the water “up & over” to the nearest drain.

HP-50 water lines

Another thing that makes the HP-50 different than other water heaters, is the cold water feed and hot water supply lines that are on the side of the tank, like an indirect water heater. The reason is, the heat pump fan is on top of the HP-50 where the water lines would normally be, the result of this = the lines are on the side. The other reason is the HP-50 is very tall. Its actually a good thing the water heater feeds cold and hot water lines on the side of the tank, due to the fact that a ladder isn’t necessary for the installation process.
If your lucky, you won’t have to do any modifications with your HP-50 installation. Although, if a few are necessary, as there was with our installation, any extra fees like we encountered (electrician to run the eclectic line to the new installation location), the return on investment makes everything still worth it. The HP-50 is so efficient, that in the right conditions, it uses less than half the energy as that of normal electric water heaters. The $1,500 federal tax credit makes this heater so affordable. It’s almost crazy not to make the investment for this water heater. It comes with a ten year warranty, which is longer than the industry standard 6 year warranty.

HP-50 temp pad

In energy saver mode, the heat pump does all the work, at this time the water heaters heat pump does make some noise, but it’s not to loud. I’d say the HP-50, when operating on energy saver mode, is about as loud as a large freezer, something a bit louder than the refrigerator in your home. The sound is a hum, just like a commercial grade freezer would make.
Note: The HP-50 will not start heating water in the energy saver mode for 45 minutes after a new installation. We found that out the hard way as we stood around the heater wondering what was wrong, because we couldn’t hear the fan on the heat pump kick on. We knew that we installed it correctly, so we waited and tried to call the factory reps, but 45 minutes after the installation, the HP-50 just kicks on by itself. We weren’t sure what to make of it at the time, but the next day an HP-50 rep told us that a 45 minute delay is normal. Surprisingly, we didn’t see this information in the installation manual, possibly because it’s so new that it was left out by mistake.

Prices for the HP-50 varies greatly in different areas of the county. The rock bottom price for the HP-50 is around $1,500. This is the rock bottom, lowest level, discount pricing from a large plumbing supply store with the top level contractor discounts. If you’re just a normal home owner walking in a plumbing store, don’t be surprised to see prices as high as $2,550. These water heaters are extremely rare; plumbing stores don’t even have them in stock. WaterHeaterInfo.com and Bruce Somers plumbing are two of a few companies getting these heaters at reasonable prices.

HP-50 Top cover off

Here’s a picture of Bruce next to the new HP-50 heat pump water heater that he and I installed.

Buyer’s warning and advice. DO NOT BUY a HP-50 online from some shady discount plumbing website, that is nothing more than low prices and dozens of fake testimonies! Those kinds of sites are fine for buying T-shirts, books, and other small ticket ideas, but HP-50’s are very expensive, and sensitive because the entire thing is filled with brand, spanking new technology. So don’t take the chance with a company you don’t know or looks too good to be true. I don’t think you should take the chance on buying one of these expensive HP-50 water heaters that could have been mishandled. Saving a couple hundred bucks is a great idea if you ask us, but not if it gets damaged in any way, because these heaters are not easily replaceable!
That being said, we do sell HP-50’s for $1,890, as well as offer free and careful delivery for CT residents. Out of state residents will have to come pick it up, as we don’t offer shipping and wouldn’t trust one of these heaters to a shipping company, so please don’t ask us to.

Hopefully this was helpful. If you have any questions about the HP-50 just ask away, we’re always glad to answer any of your questions. If you would like more information about the new Rheem HP-50 electric heat pump hot water heater from Rheem’s official HP-50 website, just click this link.

On behalf of the entire WaterHeatingInfo.com team, thanks for reading.
If you’re interested in having a HP-50 for yourself, go to the contact page and see if we can help you find a trusted installer near you. If you’re in the Fairfield or New Haven county in Connecticut, you’re in luck, because Bruce or I will be over in person in about hour or two.

That’s almost normal because no body plans on their water heater breaking down, and expenses like these seem to always come at the wrong time. You may be lucky and your water heater will provide for a couple pay checks, but how much longer after that is anyone’s guess. As some water heaters approach their final days they will develop pin holes leaks in the inner tank wall, and you see water on the floor. Some water heaters will start to leak and still continue to provide hot water for months, and some water heaters can have a massive blow out a few days after the first leak developed.

So what should you do?

You should buy a new water heater.

If money is really tight and you need to hold out until your next pay check or two keep your fingers crossed and prey.

If the water heater is in the basement with a sum pump near by. Get use some towels and create a channel from the water heater to the sump pump in order to direct the water towards the sum pump.

If your water heater is in a basement or garage with concrete floors, and not to much “stuff” around that can be ruined, get some old towels on the floor around the tank and just let it leak. The concrete will stuck up a few gallons of water a day on it’s own.

If your water heater is located within living space, or in a apartment, (any other place than garage or basement) their isn’t much you can do with out creating a mess of water. You should turn off the water going to the water heater, then drain and get all the remaining water out asap. Also this is important, you can not use any water after you remove the old tank. After the old leaking water heater is removed you can not use any water from the house or building until the lines are properly capped.

——————————

I drained my water heater, why is it filled with water again?

When you continue to use the water on any fixture that mixes (is a single handle) water will go back down backwards threw the “hot” water line back down to the water heater, and it will refill the water heater. The only way to prevent this from happening, is to have a shut off valve on both the cold and hot side of the water heater. However shut off valves on the hot side of the water heater is illegal, so technically you shouldn’t have one (but you might).

If you can’t get the new water heater installed quickly, you will want to remove the water heater and cap the water lines. That way you can use cold water in the rest of the house without making a big mess.

You could drain the water heater, and cut it out of it’s location, then cap the lines. If your not a plumber, you can get some Shark bite caps, which require no soldering skills. They just snap right over the pipe, as long as the copper, or pex has long as there is a nice clean cut. Shark bite caps are about 4-8 dollars a piece.

———————————————–

Where is the cheapest place to buy a new hot water heater?

I would normally NEVER say this but if money is extremely tight and you need a water heater today, you should go to home depot or lowes, and open a new credit card (if you don’t currently have one). I know they used to do a -No Payment deal for the first 12 months for purchases between 200 – 999 dollars on new accounts. If that’s still in effect your in luck. Open up a new credit card, and if approved you are good to go. This is only for new accounts though, so if you already have one, get a close family member to help by opening a new account and getting the heater. Home depot and Lowes prices are very close they both charge 300-600 dollars for new water heaters, and another 289-325 for installation. Home depot and Lowes both have extra charges though. 40 fee for stairs – 125 dollars for a new shut off valve if you need one. Basically if their are any issue, (which there often are with new water heater installations) they will to charge you for something in addition to your basic labor changes. The installer for either Lowes or Home Depot must allow you to put the extra charges on the store credit card. However most installers will encourage you to pay he or she directly in order to avoid sharing that “extra” money with the store.

It’s always better to go with a licensed plumber, but only a publicly traded companies like home depot & Lowes can give sell you everything up front, the heater & installation, and not take a payment for 12 months.

So you can’t find your original paper work, or you just moved into a house, the water heater is leaking. If it looks like it’s only a few years old, or even if it looks old & decrepit it may still be under warranty.

Before you buy a new one you definitely want to see if it’s under warranty.

I’m going to tell you what to do, but first you need to know what kind of heater it is.
To properly identify your hot water heater get a pen & piece of paper and read this. (to take notes)

The model/ Serial codes.

Now that you know what kind of water heater you have, we need to find the warranty code.
The code is in the label on the outside of the water heater tank jacket, looking at the water heater from the front, it should be located slightly higher than half way up, above the safety warning and lighting instructions. It may say Model number, or Serial number. It should be about 12-16 charterers in length with a mix of numbers and letters. write down this code or codes, alone with the type of water heater info you gathered.

Now that you know what kind of water heater you have, and have written down the model/ serial number it’s time to figure out what it came from so you can call or go there with the information you now have.

Where your water heater came from.

If it’s a GE or a hot point water heater it was bought at your local home depot.

If it is a Whirlpool it was bought at the Lowes home improvement store.

Sears & Kenmore water heaters are from Sears.

Now if you live, own property, or plan on moving to Connecticut the rest of this information will very helpful, for everyone else around the world not quite so much.
